Seuss-abration!!
Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss has influenced children's literature for generations. I still read any of his charming and zany books I see in waiting rooms and they never fail to bring a smile to my heart. Share a story from this prolific author with a child and share the gift Geisel left for all of us-that reading is FUN!

Leaping Leprechauns, READ

Your Library has a wealth of materials from Irish authors giving insight into a culture rich in heritage. Here are some stories to read with a child.

"Jamie O'Roarke and the Big Potato" by Tomie DePaolo.
The laziest man in all of Ireland catches a leprechaun who offers a potato seed instead of a pot of gold for his freedom.

"Lucky O'Leprechaun Comes to America" by Jana Dillon.
When Great Uncle Patrick tries to give his grandnieces a treasure to take with them to America he accidently lures a leprechaun into their suitcase-with very lucky results.

"The Last Snake in Ireland" by Sheila MacGill-Callahan.
Before he becomes a saint, Patrick drives out all but one of the snakes in Ireland and that one he throws into Scotland's Loch Ness.

"The Saint Patrick's Day Shillelagh" by Janet Nolan.
On his way from Ireland to America to escape the potato famine, young Fergus carves a shillelagh from his favorite blackthorn tree, and each St. Patrick's Day for generations his story is retold by one of his descendants.

A picture biography of the patron saint of Ireland.

Love Your Library

Babies learn to love reading because someone reads to them. Children will be eager to learn to read for themselves when reading has been fun for them. As adults they will have developed a daily habit of reading bringing both pleasure and knowlege.

Black History Month

An illustrated book of black spirituals about Old Testament heros.

Members of an extended African-American family celebrate the birth of a first-born son.

"I Have Heard of a Land" by Joyce Carol Thomas. E THO
Describes the joys and hardships of an African-American woman who staked a claim for free land in the Oklahoma territory.

"Ten Black Dots" by Donald Crews. E CRE
A counting book which shows what can be done with ten black dots. One can make a sun. Two can make a fox's eyes. Eight can make wheels on a train.

"Rap-A-Tap by Leo Dillon. E LEO
In illustrations and rhyme describes the dancing of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, one of the most famous tap dancers of all time.

"Me and Neesie" by Eloise Greenfield. E GRE
Jenelle's best friend is an invisible playmate Neesie, but things begin to change when Jenelle starts school.

Happy Holiday Reading to all. Give the gift of reading to a child every day!

Children's storytimes will resume on January 8, 2007. We will offer Family storytime programming to children with working parents on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. during Family Nite @ the Library. The 60-minute program will include books, stories, poems, music and a craft activity for children through grade five and their parent. Other storytimes are Family Storytime on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. and Mother Goose Time for babies through one year old with a parent. This is an interactive program with poems, songs finger plays, and music. Parents should provide one lap per child. Join us at the Library for a "Children's Christmas Storytime" on Monday, December 11, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. We will enjoy holiday books, stories, poetry, music and a craft activity. The program will interest preschool through
Grade 5. This is an interactive program for children with a parent.

The Holidays are a perfect time to share stories with your child. Let them repeat the story to you after you have read the book together. The Library also has poetry, craft books, books on cassette, magazines and videos for your family's enjoyment.

November 13-18, 2006 is Children's Book Week. Celebrate at the Library with Altrusa Club members on Monday, November 13 at 6:30 p.m. for a one-hour program of "Turkey Tales" for children of all ages with a parent. The Thanksgiving program includes stories and a craft activity.

Plan to share some great Holiday books with your child. The Library has poetry located in the 818 section of the non-fiction shelving near the magazines, picture books in the children's reading area, easy readers located on the top of picture book shelving, and chapter books located on the Juvenile shelves. Most of our Holiday books are on display in the children's and Juvenile area of the Library.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. Do you have a library card? There is no charge to get a libary card and you only need to have proof of your mailing address with you.

Library story times provide families with an opportunity to interact in story-related activities promoting reading readiness. Children tend to feel safer with their parents present and generally enter into group play more enthusiastically. Hearing books, stories, poetry, and music promotes vocabulary enrichment. Participating in group activities increases a child's school readiness. Working with paper and crayons gives tactile experiences to children that will tie the spoken and printed words to paper in a craft activity .

Read with your child every day and ensure greater success in almost anything undertaken by the child.
